Mindy Jacobsen
Mindy Jacobsen is a trailblazing figure in the music world, making history as the first blind woman to be ordained as a hazzan in Judaism. Her remarkable journey began with her birth, when she was diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity, resulting in blindness. Despite this challenge, Jacobsen persevered and became a pioneer in inclusive education, attending public school in Miami as one of the first group of blind children to do so.
Jacobsen's passion for music led her to become involved with the SING OUT cast, where she was the first blind member in her local group. She later went on to found a SING OUT cast in Tallahassee, Florida, showcasing her dedication to music and community. In addition to her musical pursuits, Jacobsen is also a prominent advocate for the blind community, serving as the First Vice President of the National Federation of the Blind of New York. Her ordination as a hazzan in 1978 by Hebrew Union College marked a significant milestone in her career, cementing her place as a groundbreaking figure in Jewish music and beyond.
