British rabbi (1921–1999)

Immanuel Jakobovits, Baron Jakobovits, was a prominent British rabbi who played a significant role in the Jewish community. Born in 1921, he went on to hold several esteemed positions, including Chief Rabbi of Ireland and rabbi of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue in New York City. His most notable role, however, was as the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, a position he held from 1967 to 1991.

Throughout his career, Jakobovits was recognized not only for his leadership in the Jewish community but also for his expertise in medical ethics from a Jewish perspective. His contributions were acknowledged with a knighthood in 1981. In 1988, he made history by becoming the first Chief Rabbi to be appointed to the House of Lords, taking the title Baron Jakobovits. He passed away in 1999, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to his faith and community.
