Benjamin Nehemiah Solomon
Benjamin Nehemiah Solomon was a linguist of Polish-Jewish origin who made a significant contribution to the field of biblical translation. After converting to Christianity, he relocated to England, where he pursued his work in linguistics. Solomon's most notable achievement was the translation of the New Testament into Yiddish, a project that highlighted his proficiency in both the original text and the target language.
The publication of Solomon's Yiddish translation of the New Testament in 1821 marked a milestone in the history of biblical translation. The London Jews Society sponsored the publication, recognizing the importance of making the text accessible to Yiddish-speaking communities. Although Solomon was not the first to translate a biblical text into Yiddish - Jekuthiel Blitz of Wittmund had already translated the Hebrew Bible into Yiddish in 1679 - his work on the New Testament represented a major accomplishment in the field of linguistics and biblical studies.
